89 Mojo: News/Blog

Tomorrow night - March 6, 2009

This Saturday we will be at Coasters in Racine for the annual "Thoughts For Food" benefit. This is always a good time. We will be playing from 10- 11:15. 2 great acts before us and 1 to follow. Here is the website for more info: http://www.thoughtsforfood.org/schedule.html If you didn't have a chance to catch us a few weeks ago, come on out! We have a ton of new stuff. We would love to see ya!

Enjoy the weather!

Pics from Tuesday night - February 27, 2009

Pics are up - check 'em out! Many thanks to Dom's brother Pete the s.o.b. - he asked for us to use his proper name- for taking them. Playing a bunch of new stuff acoustically had us a little nervous, but I thought nearly everything was better than we had hoped. It was an incredible turnout (especially for a Tuesday night), and it feels great to know that the proceeds are going to the Make-a-Wish foundation. Specifically, it will help a 4 year girl make her wish of a pink bedroom and new bed come true. Just thinking about it again almost brings me to tears. Anyway, thank you to all who came out and also to those just stopping by our site. We'd really love to see ya' on March 7th for Thoughts for Food (yet another great event which benefits the Racine Food Bank).
Welcome to March - winter is finally nearing an end! Take care -

Fat Tuesday - February 23, 2009

Yessirree - we're gonna be throwin' down some great N'Awlin's style food, and then we'll be throwin' down a hot plate of acoustic party music! Coin's has this great party every year on Fat Tuesday, but this year they decided to kick it up a notch by adding some live tunes. We play from 8-11pm, so it won't even be that late for those that have to work in the morning. You may be a bit groggy for the first few hours, but the memories will last a lifetime. Sounds like a reasonable trade-off to me...

Thank you to all that came out last Saturday night in Racine. Our first show back felt absolutely fantastic, and we could tell the time off was well worth it. Making it even better was the fact that the club was packed - thanks in part to our good friends Sunspot, who RAWKED, as well as the Mardi Crawl revelers who stopped in and joined the party. Only thing we forgot that night was a camera, doggonit! So if any of you have pictures you'd like to share - of you and your friends, the bands, random drunk people, etc - plesae send them to us at photos@89mojo.com, and we'll post 'em here.

Thanks again. See ya' tomorrow night...hopefully. Take care -

Finally! - February 18, 2009

"Do you still play in a band?", "Are you ever gonna play a show again?", "Were you in Sahara Jack?", "Do you guys know any Skynard?", "Is McAuliffe's on 22nd Ave?", "Do fries come with that shake?"

All questions we have heard many times over the last few months.....
The answer is YES to all...... except the Skynard thing (that's NO).

Here we are, nearly 4 months from our last show. Halloween at the Brat Stop. We had a small acoustic train wreck in there somewhere, but that doesn't count. It didn't happen in our minds!

4 months is the longest drought for gig's we can remember. Maybe since high school...BUT.... this was by choice! We have really focused on writing and getting new material together for our next CD. We are really excited about what has come out of this. I think all 4 of us will agree, the time has been well spent and turned out better than anticipated.

We have a bunch of new originals to turn you guys onto, and even managed to pick up a few new covers as well. We are 'recharged' and ready to get busy.

So here we go.... again....

This Saturday we will be at McAuliffe's on the Square in downtown Racine. Yes, there is a McAuliffe's on 22nd ave (that's K-town talk, Ohio St is Racine talk, or is it Meacham????) We are playing at the location that is downtown. It's located on 6th street just west of Main ST. This the annual Mardi Crawl celebration. 25 bars, 5 buses, and tons of beads. We will be playing with SunSpot from Madison. These guys are great - http://www.myspace.com/sunspotmusic - check them out! They will kick off the night at around 9:30 or so, we will start around 11pm or so. And then after that, who knows...but we all just may jam a few tunes together! This is gonna be a blast...

FAT TUESDAY-------
We will be doing an acoustic show at Coin's for the big Fat Tuesday party Feb. 24th. Tons of great Cajun food, more beads, and some good time, sing-along rock. Don't 'freak', we will be playing from 8pm - 11pm. Plenty of time to still make it to work. This looks like a winner.

Lots of cool stuff coming up
Thoughts for Food in March
Brat Stop in April
Coins and Potowatami in May.
Bloomin' Days in June.

It's on. Finally.

Tidbits - February 11, 2009

Ernie's song "Autistic" (mentioned in the previous blog) is now available on I-tunes, which makes it even easier for you to download. It will also be available at many of the other well known digital music retailers very soon.

We just locked in our Bloomin' Days date...Friday, June 5th at 6pm on the Main Stage. After us will be a Radioactive Squirrels reunion, which will be really cool as they are definitely missed by live music fans in the area. Yep, this should be a blast!

FYI - Our June 13th date at Coin's will likely be moved to a later date. Diddy's gonna be raking in cash in Vegas...

Just over a week until our first show back (Feb. 21st at McAuliffe's on the Square). We've got new tunes that we're excited to play, a great band (Sunspot) to share the night with, AND it's during Mardi Crawl in downtown Racine! Get the beads out. Game on.

Get the Kleenex ready - February 3, 2009

A friend posted this incredible video on Facebook, and I had to share it here as well. Touching and inspirational, to say the least -

Speaking of autism, our good friend (and former member) Ernie Grice has written an amazing song about his twin boys, who are autistic. He recorded it start to finish at his home, and it sounds fantastic. And the coolest thing about it is that he is donating half it's proceeds to autism foundations and research. You can read more about it, give it a listen, and download it here:

Wanna laugh? - January 15, 2009

Our buddy Tim-may sent us this link, and it was one of the funniest things we've seen online. To fully appreciate, you should know Van Halen's early stuff...
http://www.thetyser.com/
Enjoy.

New things - - January 7, 2009

New year - new songs - and now, finally, some new dates. We're excited about the thought of cranking up the rock show again, and we're also looking forward to playing some new songs. The first couple shows we have booked will all be with some fun, great bands - so it'll be nice to pack all our energy into one big set and be able to enjoy the other half of the night hanging out with you guys, while hearing some good live rock.

We'll be writing some new bios soon, as well as adding more music to the site, so please check back for that.

Stay tuned, and stay warm -

Acoustic party tomorrow night - December 16, 2008

Coin's in Kenosha.
10pm - ???
Christmas cheer and beer!

Forget about your snow boots...dig out your drinking boots!

In case you wondered... - November 28, 2008

...somebody finally figured out the lyrics to Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter". This will truly make the song even that much more meaningful when we do it. Enjoy -

178 more great Halloween pics! - November 6, 2008

Go to Brat Stop's MySpace page to see them all. Their photographer did an excellent job. Here's the link:

Halloween pictures - November 3, 2008

Check 'em out! We had an absolute blast, although those Elvis suits were cooking us! There were some really great costumes; some funny, some scary, some very creative, and some downright sexy and saucy. And Al, by the way, was a natural with the Elvis moves and persona!

Bobby Rocket's was fun as well. The sound is so great there that makes it a joy to play. We got to play some new originals as well as some stuff we haven't done in a few years, and that even made it more enjoyable.

Needless to say, we're hoping to be back at both places sometime in the future.

We only have one remaining show for the next couple months. It's going to be a fun acoustic Christmas show at Coin's on Wednesday, December 17th. In other words, start requesting the 18th off work now.

We love ya' -

Grant

A few words from Butch - October 30, 2008

Here's yet another reason why we love Butch Walker: he always has the right way to say something. Here's his take on Halloween -

"Halloween is my fave holiday. You get to see girls get a "get out of slut jail free card" so that they can wear those skimpy, online-purchased, cinderella being a cop costumes. And boys? They just get to accentuate their stupidity (last year, I dressed as a hillbilly... Real stretch...). Have fun with this glorious, meaningless excuse to get f@#*ed up, and possibly not get recognized in the process. "

We couldn't say it better. Hope to see ya' sometime this weekend, and we all can be slutty, stupid, and drunk together...

Halloween weekend - October 29, 2008

Hey all....

Here's your Halloween reminder -

If you haven't made plans and are wondering what to do this Friday, we will be at the Brat Stop for the biggest Halloween party IN ALL THE LAND! The Brat is famous (and legendary) for this night. Huge prizes with costumes that will blow your mind. $1000 for 1st place and $500 for 2nd! We are really excited to be part of it. YES...... we will be dressing up. This is definitely something you don't want to miss. "I hear a train-wreck a-comin', it's comin' down the track..."

The following night we have another cool gig at Bobby Rockets in Lyons, Wi. Great place with good food, great sound, and cool staff. Not a far drive at all for K-towners.
We might throw a few more originals in this set after the Halloween dance party!

Come on out. It's gonna be a crazy weekend!

Be our myspace friend........

I need 1 run and 9 outs for my Phillies. This has been the longest game ever.

Peace.

DOM

Tomorrow morning - October 24, 2008

Yup. That's right. "MORNING." We'll be doing an acoustic set at Kenosha Harbor Market for the final day that it's outdoors (they move to inside the Rhode for the winter session). Anyway, there are tons of vendors as well as a chef demonstration at around noon, so please stop on out if ya' get a chance.

Take care -

Dom in Bon Jovi video??? - October 18, 2008

Check this out. When we first saw this video - many moons ago - we had to rewind (yes, it was VHS back then) it over and over to figure out if it was actually Dom in it. Hey, those days were pretty hazy, so it was hard to figure out. We still don't REALLY know, but we're guessing it was just a Dom impersonator. The quality isn't the best, making it harder to see, but trust me in that it is the spittin' image of him. Pause it at 2:25...he's the long-haired dude in the leather jacket throwing the rock horns. Wait, did I just describe every guy in 1987???

Sad news - October 15, 2008

Dommer's best friend "Titan" is no longer with us...at least in this world. She was everything to him, and our heartfelt condolences go out to him. We're sure that one day you'll both be together again...

More pics, and an updated show - October 9, 2008

It took some time, but the remaining pictures from our 89 Mojo/Sahara Jack show have been posted. Thank you to our good friend Matt who took 'em. They are in the same album, in the bottom half.
Check 'em out!
And by the way, our acoustic set at Kenosha's Market Square has been bumped up from 10/25 to 10/18. We'll be playing from 10am until 2pm, so it'd be great to see you there. It's family-friendly, so bring the kids, and there's lots of other cool things there as well. Hope to see ya' there -

Peace -

Grant

a tough weekend - October 5, 2008

Well, both the Cubs and Brewers are done for the year. I guess everyone in this area can be miserable together. But at least they gave us fans the rare joy of making it to the post-season. Here's to next year. Dom and his Phillies are still in, so if you're needing someone to root for...
The Sox are in it as well, but I think I actually only know of one Sox fan, which is Dom's brother Pete. They must have called in some "Italian favors"...

Our show at Party on the Pavement went surprisingly well, considering Al could not be there. It was a last minute thing, and we're not ones to cancel...so we made the best of it. There were a ton of people, and the response was very good, so that was encouraging as well as much appreciated. We really hope to see some of the new faces again sometime in the future.

Thanks again. Take care, and be good to each other -

Grant

Last Call - October 3, 2008

The summer is slowly slipping away from us. Days are getting shorter and the nights are getting long. ( Triumph - "Lay it On the Line" around 1982) HA! We must take advantage of what is left, and indulge in some of the favorite things that come with the outdoors. A few of my favorites are golf, baseball games, and festivals / concerts. It just so happens that all these could find me with a beverage of some sort in my hand. Summer is a blissful time.

So, if playoff baseball isn't treating you so well, try this on Saturday.
We will be playing at Party On the Pavement in Racine on Saturday. We play from 1:30 - 3pm on the Johnson Stage. Some of the publications have us listed at noon, that is not true...I will still be sleeping. It's 1:30.
The location is Downtown near Monument Square. We played last year, and it's a blast. TONS of stuff for the kids (I hear there's even a Ferris Wheel this year). Good food. Bands everywhere. And a little insight.... you can drink outside. Do you like how I tied that all in!! BAM

Start working on your costume, we will be at The Brat Stop for Halloween.

We are still looking to get that 1000th myspace friend. If you are not our friend please do so. We only need roughly 30 more. The lucky 1000th friend will get 2 free tickets to the Brat Stop party, and a lap dance from Al and Dommer (the single guys), and Bri, Grant and I will watch with a creepy grin.

My baseball predictions.....
Brewers: will be sued by November when CC's arm has to be reattached. Prince goes back to beef. Phils in 4
Cubs: by Saturday it will be leaked out the Big Z is in legal trouble for beating his wife after last night, should of had a Gatorade cooler in his bedroom. Sweet Lou will take out Fukudome and play right field himself. Dodgers in 3
Sox: AJ will punch someone before the series is over. Rays in 5

Sorry. It may not be good karma for me, I may even be jinxing myself. I feel as a journalist I need to speak my mind. It may come back to haunt me, but tomorrow I want to be known as Dom Victorino....the Dragon Slayer.

CC you later! (Sorry Brian)

Dom (go Phil's!)

What a weekend!! - September 29, 2008

Friday night's show at Coin's was very cool. We didn't really want to try doing a full blown Sahara Jack show, so we decided to simply crank out a set in the middle of a Mojo gig. It ended being a lot of fun, and it felt great to play some of the old songs. Having a bunch of the original SJ fans on hand is what truly made it a special night. Thanks to all of you for coming out! Even the original "road crew" of Dommer, Timmay, and Gutter were there, giving it a swift kick of authenticity. I think Gutter may have gone back the next morning to collect any half-finished-but-forgotten-about beers...

Gene and Paul - thanks so much for making the trip back to Wisconsin. It was a great pleasure to share the stage with wonderful friends, and some incredibly talented musicians as well. Al and Diddy - thanks again for understanding and being so cool from the start. Dom was the master coordinator of the whole weekend, and none of it would've happened without him.
I love all you guys. My liver, however, doesn't feel quite the same. Literally.

There were ALOT of pictures taken that night.
Here are some taken by Gene's fiancee (everyone say "Congrat's!") Thanks very much Susan. We can't wait to all get together again for your wedding next year! Our buddy Matt took some pictures as well, and hopefully those will be up sometime in the near future.

Party on the Pavement this Saturday afternoon. Great outdoor event on Main Street in downtown Racine. We play at 1:30pm. Bring the kids - we promise to be on our best behavior. Take care -

Grant

Big Rock Show Tonite! - September 26, 2008

Coin's Sports Bar in Kenosha. The show time is 9:30pm.
Our good friend Steve Reinkober is getting married on Saturday, thus the Friday gig. This also means we will have some good friends from out of town in over the weekend.
Gene Schmitz (Sahara Jack) and Paul Geasland (Sahara Jack + 89 Mojo "Watchin My World Go By") will be with us at Coins to join us for awhile.
We plan on doing some older tunes you may have not heard in a while, some songs you wish we would stop doing, and some songs we don't even remember.
AL and Brian will be there to keep our "flashback" under control. So if you don't know who Sahara Jack is, or only know because your Mother used to go see them, we will still have all the 89 Mojo 'train wreck' material as well!
On that note, Grant and I would like to thank AL and DIDDY..... It's really cool that they welcome in these shows, and do so with open arms. (insert Journey song here) Seriously, thanks guys. It's not a Sahara Jack reunion, it's a family get together. WE ALL KNOW HOW THOSE END UP........... of course.........TRAINWRECK.

Get there early, shot specials, Dommer's 90 degree sound, Frankie, Freak, Korbel, brother Plags???, Sambuca, and sweaty middle aged men.

Peace.

Dom

Pics from last weekend - September 23, 2008

We only took a couple, but the pictures from the Thoughts for Food "Fall Harvest" are up. Many thanks to all that came out and supported the clubs, bands, and most importantly, the cause. We promise that this Friday night's show we will get lots of pictures taken. To add to the always great time/train wreck that is Mojo at Coin's, Paul Geasland and Gene Schmitz will be in town and will be coming up for a rare Sahara Jack set. More info to come.

The Brew-Crew got a nice win tonight...lets get them into the playoffs with the Cubs!!!

Okay, so not EVERY Friday... - September 19, 2008

Before I get into this video, let me ask you to please stop out tomorrow night for Thoughts For Food.(www.thoughtsforfood.org)
We play at the Ivanhoe Pub at 8:30, but whether you can make it there or not, try to stop out at one of the many participating venues, as it's for the Racine County Food Bank. "Guilt-free good times", as we like to call it.

I was hoping to put a video up here every Friday night, but I have to admit that it's tough to do...especially with a day job, kids, the Brewers, Packers, fantasy football, the Debbie Gibson vs. Tiffany war I'm still waging, and a nasty meth habit...well, I'm sure you all know what I mean. Anyway, I do have a little video nugget of a great song that is on a cd I've been listening to lately by "The Academy Is..." - strange name but great band. Their music makes me think of high school...in the good kind of way.
By the way, the guitar player of this band also plays with Butch Walker. Talk about being envious...
Hope you like.
Take care,
Grant

Thoughts for Food - September 17, 2008

Hey all,
Hope you're enjoying the great weather, the start of football, and one heck of a playoff race.
Now it's time to fit some 'rock' in as well!

This Saturday we will be at Ivanhoe Pub in Racine for Thoughts For Food. It's a downtown fundraiser / pub crawl that's been going on for many years.
It's a great time for sure!

We will be playing from 8:30 - 9:45. Here is the link for more info: http://www. thoughtsforfood. org/intro. html

Also, want to remind ya....
Next Friday, Sept. 26th we will be playing at Coin's. Always a blast, but this time we have some special guests. Paul Geasland and Gene Schmitz will join us onstage. They used to play with Dom and Grant in a well-known local band called Sahara Jack. So there will be a special set of old-school SJ music. This will be a 9:30pm start, so get here early. I have a feeling this will fill up fast...

Be good to yourself -
