89 Mojo: News/Blog

Updates - - August 31, 2009

First off, some pics from Rock the Block are up. As always, it was an incredible night thanks to the many, many people that come out and support it each year. It was also really cool sharing the night with two great bands, Unlikely Hero & Blu Steel. Not only are they our friends, but they're incredible musicians as well as genuine, fun, good people. Much like our pal Chad who came down from Madison to join us onstage once again. That is always a pleasure. Lets keep this Rock the Block going every year...it's good for the community AND good for the soul.

Next Saturday (9/12) we will be at Southfest (Sunnyside Park in Kenosha). It's your last chance to hang outside with friends and family, have some food, play some games, and listen to some live rock 'n roll. Hey, there's even beer available for the couple of you that might enjoy that sort of thing! We start at 5pm, but get there early to enjoy the festival, including the Trinity Irish Dancers that go on at 4:30. And following us is a great band called the Karlz. Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and actually get some decent weather...

For much of September and October, we'll be taking some time off to actually begin recording the new cd that we've talking about for awhile now. We're excited about it, as we are trying some new things musically and lyrically. No idea on when it'll be done and available, but we'll give updates as they happen.

Oct. 31st we're glad to be back at the Brat Stop for their amazing Halloween party. Last year was awesome, and this year will be even better since we'll be sharing the night with New Dog Trick. We played once before with these guys, and they are a killer rock/party band.

Hope all's well. Peace -

Grant

RTB09 - August 20, 2009

Yes! Rock the Block is just around the corner (specifically, the corner of 22nd Ave and 52nd Street) - and we're very excited about it! For those who aren't quite sure what it is, it's a big 52nd Street pub crawl with entertainment at a bunch of different clubs. $5 in advance ($10 at the door) gets you a wristband that allows entry into all of the participating venues...and there's ALOT of great acts performing! We'll be at Coin's (of course, it's our "home") with our great friends Unlikely Hero playing at 8pm, us at about 9:15, and our longtime local heroes Blu Steel putting an exclamation mark on the evening at about 11pm. It's a party for a great cause (Boys and Girls Club), and we'd love to see ya' -

Hey, next Friday night we'll be playing at the Big Fish Bash at the Festival grounds at the Racine lakefront. Some of you may recall this event by it's previous name of "Salmon-a-rama". By any name - it should be a blast, and the weather is supposed to be great! Hope to see ya' there -

Also, our Bloomin' Days performance has been playing on cable lately. We're not sure of all the times, but just check channel 14 (for Time Warner subscribers) and it lists the program schedule.

Tuesday night photo club - June 23, 2009

Photos from last Saturday night's rock show at Coin's are up. We loved playing. We really hope that those of you who stopped enjoyed yourselves as well.

Lets do it again this Saturday afternoon! Outdoor "tiki-bar" in the middle of summer...we're there! Check our "Dates" page for more info.

Enjoy the sunny goodness while we have it!!

All aboard! - June 20, 2009

In case anyone was afraid of the heat...the train is fully air-conditioned! That's right, we were in Coin's setting up earlier, and it's nice and cool inside...

Come celebrate my best friend's birthday with us! We'd love to see ya' -

And now for the real birthday party... - June 17, 2009

Saturday night we'll be celebrating Dom's birthday with an all-out rock show at Coin's. We're cranking everything up to 11 this time. Why 11, and not 10, you ask? Because it's one more! And by "everything", we mean more rocking, more songs, more volume, and I reckon a few more drinks?? And it's not only Dom's b-day, Tricia the bartender and our pal Rudy ("Swayze") will also be celebrating theirs...and I'm sure there will be some others as well. We hope you plan to be there. And now that we're thinking about it, lets make sure we all have some sort of plan on getting home safely. We love ya', doggonit...

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, pics from Beloit are posted.

Take care -

Happy Birthday Dom! - June 14, 2009

And what a way to start a birthday! To say we had a blast last night would be a complete understatement. Wow - it was one of the most fun nights we've had in a long time...and we generally have fun wherever we are! Our good buddy Steve Hawkins also did a fantastic job sitting in on drums. We played from 5:30-9pm, leaving the rest of the night free for us to enjoy the party, as well as a great band called Dynamite Society. Rico and John and everyone else from the Hog Cabin were wonderful as always, which is one of the big reasons we've always loved making the trip to Beloit. It was really cool to see some old friends, especially Dave Hakester, Vikki and Nick, Justin & Mezzy (oh, what a night HE had!), and our faithful friends Steve, Beth, and the Freak. Pictures will be up soon, but here's one of my favorites that I wanted to share right away -

It's alive! - June 12, 2009

Sorry it took a few more days than expected to get the pictures from Bloomin' Days up. Truth be told, my computer is old (hey, I'm a poet and didn't know it!)...okay, both of those were bad, and you have my apologies. Anywho - my computer IS old; if my calculations are correct, it's 98.6 years old in people years. No, it's not a Commodore 64, but it probably does have some Commodores music on it (Lionel Richie anyone???...okay - Nicole Richie's dad for the young-folk). Okay, where was I? Oh yeah, my computer had another "episode" - I thought it had died but we somehow revived it. These episodes are getting more frequent, and I realize the time is soon approaching when I will have to "pull the plug", so to speak. So if there becomes a lull between updates, you'll know the inevitable has happened.

If or when that occurs - don't be sad. This old dog has seen and experienced many many things, and it's memory is quite full. I can only hope my own life plays out the same way. Okay, I think I've taken the analogies a little too far...

If you made this far, congratulations, and thanks for hanging in there. Hope to see you soon -

Peace and love -

Roadtrip to Beloit...or ride the train! - June 10, 2009

Hey all,

Hope you had a great weekend.
Thanks to all of you who came out on Friday for Bloomin' Day's. WOW, that was a great time. Perfect weather and one fired up crowd! That's what outdoor shows are all about.
Saturday, well that's a different story! It was cold, rainy, and laid back. We called it the "Saturday Rain Wreck"! None the less, a good time.
Thanks again to all who made it.
Shakey, Amber, Susan and Katie get bonus points for perfect attendance.

On to the now....
"I here that train a comin'..." Johnny Cash
Look out. All aboard.
We are taking the train out of town. Time for a roadtrip.
We are going back to Beloit.
It has been a few years, all the scars have healed, the bans have all been lifted.
It's almost "folklore" for those who have been hanging around for awhile.

Our good friend Rico used to own a place called the Pitchers Mound that we often played. He since has ventured to a new place called the Hog Cabin. They put on an event each year called 'Ya-Mon-Fest". This year he gave us a call to come join the fun.
Saturday we will be playing from 5:30 - 8:30. Our good friend Steve Hawkins will be joining us. Brian will be gambling in Michigan. If I didn't know any better, I would say his liver put him up to this!! Now it's Steve who is gambling.
Brian didn't do so well with the big score from his fishing trip, maybe this is his time to shine! Put all your money on black in honor of Sambuca.
Oh yeah, at midnight it will be my birthday...... now you hear the Johnny Cash, don't ya.

That brings us to the next stop....
June 20th we will be at Coin's. Mark say's this will be my birthday observed. It is also Tricia the bartender's birthday as well. The weather will be warm, Brian will return filthy rich, and all will be right in Mojo land.

June 27th, from 3-6pm, we will be playing outside at the Chancery's TIKI BAR in downtown Racine.

Be safe.

Oh yeah - pictures from Bloomin' Days should be up later tonight.

Happy Monday - June 8, 2009

Hey everyone! Hope y'all had a great weekend. We really enjoyed playing at Bloomin' Days. The wonderful weather on Friday made for an incredible crowd, and although the crummy weather on Saturday kept many folks away, we still enjoyed pulling out the acoustics for a set. Pictures will be up soon.

This Saturday we're back in Beloit, with two special things going on:
1) Ya-Mon-Fest. It's a big party with the proceeds going to an education fund for the daughters of Rebecca Lovell.
2) It's the start of Dom's birthday celebration!

Let us know if you'll be making the trip, and we might be able to hook you up with discounted hotel rooms.

Peace & love -

Grant

Start of Summer - June 3, 2009

Hey all!
We will be playing our first outdoor show of the year this weekend! Bloomin' Days on Kenosha's harbor takes place this Friday and Saturday. 54th St and 7th Ave is where it's going down.
Friday we play at the main stage from 6pm - 7:30pm. Big stage, big guitars and drums, and close to the beer tent! Get off work, grab some friends and come on down! They say it will be in the 70's that day. I know, that seems hard to even imagine....... This is going to be bloomin' crazy.
Saturday Grant, Brian, and I will be out working the street. Just another normal Saturday, right? We will be doing an acoustic street performance at 3pm. Come heckle us.

Why are these two performances cool........ if you have kids, you can bring them... if you start drinking early and can't make a 10pm club show, you will be just primed.... if you wake up before 7am and can't stay awake, it will still be light outside..... if you enjoy being outside, it's perfect.

Hope to see ya this weekend.

COMING UP:

June 13th in Beloit (road trip???)
June 20th at Coins

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers tonite! - May 28, 2009

They have an opening act on tour with them this time around, so we couldn't land the supporting act...but a few of us will still be there to hear one the greatest touring bands around. Vnuk's in Cudahy, if you'd to join in on the fun -

By the way, we had a blast at McAuliffe's on the Square last weekend. Steve Hawkins did an incredible job sitting in on drums and percussion, especially without any rehearsal time. Thanks to all that came out. We only have a couple pics from the night, and they should be up in a day or two.

Take care -

Grant

Sunday Sunday Sunday! - May 23, 2009

Hey all!
Well, since you all didn't invite us to your BBQ, and the nice weather showed up way too early this week, we are having our own party.
Sunday night we will be playing at McAuliffe's on The Square in Downtown Racine. The show, or should I say "party" will be from 8pm - 11pm. Late enough for you to still make it if you have daytime plans, and early enough for those who start early and can't finish the marathon.
Brian took the northbound train to fish with his boys, so Steve Hawkins will join our train wreck this evening. Poor guy. This is gonna be a fun, loose event. Acoustic stuff, maybe a guest or 2, "shout outs" of songs we don't know, a visit from our good friend Chief Jay...... you get the picture.
So stop out. It's gonna be a memorable event. All train wrecks are.

Have a safe weekend. We hope Brian comes back with tons of fish for that fish fry he's having for his bandmates after the June 5th Bloomin' Days show. That's a good reminder for you all to come by at 6pm on the Kenosha lakefront that day. Like how I worked that in???

Peace.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! - May 5, 2009

Hope everyone has had a couple margaritas, or a few fingers of tequila chased by a cold bottle of Dos Equis. Either way, hope your day and night are muy bueno. The pics from last Saturday night should be up in a day or two, so please check back for those. Muchas Gracias to all that stopped by - it's much appreciated.

Next Wednesday night we're up in Milwaukee at the casino for our first acoustic show there. Hope to see ya' there...we'll have a few drinks and spin some slots with ya' in-between sets.

Adios, and buenos noches -

Your amigos.

Dos de Mayo - April 29, 2009

Saturday will be loco...... not like a locomotive..... well, a train wreck may be involved. Crazy, because we will be playing at Coin's celebrating Cinco de Mayo! I know, it's a few days early. I don't know too many people up for tequila and Coronas on a Tuesday night. Coronas would be ok, but the tequila would scare some people who need to work in the morning. Thus, the early fiesta!

We will be playing at Coin's on Saturday May 2nd at 10pm. Drink specials, our good friend Gerry's ("Freak") birthday, tequila, and four guys wearing sombreros. It's a can't miss fiesta. This show always features our bad grasp of the Spanish language. I promise by Saturday night I will learn how to say "train wreck" properly in Spanish.
It will be a fiesta grande!

I'm going to suggest if you have a Sombrero, WEAR IT!! If not, go buy one. This will make for great pictures on this here site!
Check out our myspace and Facebook pages as well.

Thanks to all who came to the MS benefit last week. It was a blast. Check out the pics to see if you are in our archives!

Tell all your friends..... amigos, if you will. This is gonna be buenos tiempos!

Sabado, Sabado, Sabado!!

Stay safe.

24 for the 24th - April 24, 2009

We posted 24 pictures from the "Putting the Screws 2 MS" show we played last weekend. As always, it was a "Saturday night party" that happened to be on a Sunday afternoon...good times.

We're still taking on more new tunes, and looking forward to the summer! Some more dates are booked, and a few more to be soon. We hope to see ya' there, 'cuz doggonit, we love ya' -

Sunday party during daylight - April 15, 2009

We will be playing at the annual MS benefit this Sunday afternoon. I think this is our 4th year doing this event. It's always a blast with tons of prizes, raffles, cocktails, and people. Usually winds up in a train wreck. The benefit is from 1-5pm on Sunday at Coin's in Kenosha. We will be playing from around 2 - 4 or so.
So, you people who choose to drink when the sun is still out.... this is right up your alley!! You can still be in bed for Monday morning at a decent hour.
Come on out!! It's for a good cause.

Thanks to all who came out to the Brat Stop on the 4th. WOW, that was a great time. The break we took at the end of last year was a bit refreshing.... but it sure is nice playing. The first 4 shows of '09 have been awesome. Thanks for the support!

We will be at Coin's on May 2nd for a CINCO DE MAYO bash. Viva la mojo. (I have no idea if that means anything????)

Brat Stop photos are up - April 8, 2009

See 'em here!
Thanks once to all that came out. We had a blast and hope you did as well. I'd also like to give a special thanks to all my family members that came out (some that traveled many miles)...it was almost a family reunion, and it was really nice having you all there!

Cheers -

Grant

It worked! - April 7, 2009

Well, we don't have the pictures up yet, but there is a video! And now that it's been figured out, we will have more in the future. The pics, well, give us another day or two...

Last night - April 5, 2009

Wow - what a stellar time last night! Being as big as it is, the Brat Stop is an awesome place to play, but equally as difficult to fill with people. With that said, many thanks to all of you that stopped by and helped fill it up and make it a wonderful night. Also, we'd love to thank New Dog Trick for playing an incredible set, and all their friends and fans for coming out. Those guys are spectatular musicians that we've always looked up to you, and always will. The fact that they're very cool people made the evening even more fun and enjoyable. Pictures and - if I figure it out correctly - a couple videos will hopefully be up within a few days.

A nap would be wonderful right now, but I'm afraid it's not in the cards...

Be well -

Grant
